What Makes a Drinking Game Actually Good?
The best drinking games aren't really about drinking — they're about laughs, social bonding, and a little friendly competition. Alcohol is a prop, not the point. The best games have clear rules, quick rounds, and moments that create stories you'll tell for years.
Classic Games You Need to Know
1. Kings (King's Cup)
Players: 4–12 | Equipment: Deck of cards, one large cup
Spread a deck of cards face-down around a central cup. Players take turns drawing cards; each has a rule:
- Ace: Waterfall — everyone drinks in a chain
- 2: You — pick someone to drink
- 3: Me — you drink
- 4: Floor — last person to touch the floor drinks
- 5: Guys drink
- 6: Girls drink
- 7: Heaven — last to raise their hand drinks
- 8: Mate — pick a partner who drinks when you do
- 9: Rhyme — say a word; players rhyme until someone fails
- 10: Categories — name items in a category until someone blanks
- Jack: Make a new rule
- Queen: Question master — trick players into answering questions
- King: Pour some of your drink into the central cup. Who draws the last king finishes it.
2. Beer Pong
Players: 2–4 (2 teams) | Equipment: Ping pong table, cups, balls
Arrange 10 cups in a triangle at each end. Teams take turns throwing ping pong balls into the opposing team's cups. When a ball lands in a cup, the opposing team drinks that cup and removes it. The team that clears all the other team's cups wins. Simple, iconic, and always a crowd-pleaser.
3. Flip Cup
Players: 6–20 | Equipment: Plastic cups
Two teams line up on opposite sides of a table. On "go," the first player on each side drinks their cup, places it upside-down on the table edge, and flips it right-side-up with one finger before the next player starts. First team to finish the relay wins. It's chaotic, loud, and perfect for large groups.
Games That Don't Need Any Equipment
4. Never Have I Ever (Drinking Version)
Players: 4–10 | Equipment: Just drinks
Players take turns saying "Never have I ever..." followed by something they've never done. Anyone who HAS done it takes a sip. The more honest (and specific) the statements, the more revelations emerge. Keep a mix of funny, surprising, and light-hearted prompts.
5. Most Likely To
Players: 4–10 | Equipment: Just drinks
One player poses a "most likely to" question: "Who is most likely to show up late to their own wedding?" Everyone counts down from three and simultaneously points at whoever they think fits. The person with the most fingers pointed at them drinks one sip per finger. Brutally honest and extremely funny.
6. Straight Face
Players: 4–8 | Equipment: Paper and pens
Everyone writes something ridiculous or funny on a slip of paper. Slips go in a pile. Players draw one and read it out loud with a completely straight face. Laugh — and you drink. Simple premise, impossible to execute without cracking.
Card & Dice Games
7. Ride the Bus
Players: 3–8 | Equipment: Deck of cards
Players are dealt cards and must answer guesses (red or black? higher or lower? inside or outside? suit?) to build a hand. At the end, the player with the most cards "rides the bus" — flipping cards one at a time, drinking for each penalty card (face cards and aces). High risk, high reward.
8. Drunk Jenga
Players: 2–8 | Equipment: Jenga set, permanent marker
Write drinking rules or dares on every Jenga block before playing — things like "everyone drinks," "swap drinks with someone," or "make a rule." When you pull a block, read and execute its rule. When the tower falls, the person who toppled it finishes their drink.
Keeping It Fun and Safe
| Do | Don't |
|---|---|
| Set up a safe way home before the party starts | Pressure anyone to drink more than they want |
| Offer non-alcoholic alternatives in every game | Play drinking games with people you don't know well |
| Eat food before and during drinking | Mix alcohol with energy drinks or unknown substances |
| Keep water available at all times | Play without a clear "tap out" option |
| Check in with your fellow players throughout | Drive home, even if you feel fine |
The best nights are the ones everyone remembers clearly and fondly the next day. Drink less, laugh more — and you'll always have a better time.
